HARRISBURG, PA — State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta (D-Philadelphia) has joined the Legislators for a Guaranteed Income initiative, a coalition of 24 legislators from 17 states committed to promoting policies that advance economic equity through guaranteed income programs. The initiative builds on existing efforts led by mayors and county officials, which have already facilitated the launch of 72 pilot programs nationwide, distributing over $335 million in direct financial assistance to families.

Kenyatta, a vocal advocate for economic justice, reiterated his stance that poverty is a systemic issue rather than a personal failing. “Poverty is the moral and economic issue of our lifetime,” said Kenyatta. “We have the resources — we just haven’t had the political will. Basic income flips that script.”

The representative highlighted the harsh realities faced by many working Pennsylvanians, stating that millions are unable to meet basic expenses despite holding full-time or multiple jobs. “Living paycheck to paycheck is not a character flaw. It’s the byproduct of rigged systems that reward billionaires while families fight to survive,” he added.

Kenyatta also criticized federal policies that prioritize tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans while reducing support for working families. He emphasized the potential of guaranteed income to stimulate local economies, help small businesses thrive, and create financial stability for struggling households. “This isn’t just about survival — it’s about making sure everyday people can participate in and power the economy, not just scrape by in it.”

The Legislators for a Guaranteed Income network seeks to address growing economic disparities by advocating for policies designed to provide consistent financial support to families. The initiative represents a broader ideological shift, challenging concepts of “trickle-down economics” in favor of directly empowering working individuals.

This latest announcement spotlights Kenyatta’s efforts to tackle the root causes of economic inequality. Advocates argue that guaranteed income programs not only ease the financial struggles of working families but also contribute to stronger, more resilient communities.
