SCI Fayette Reports Death of Inmate

LABELLE, PA — Officials at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Fayette confirmed the death of inmate Thomas Gray Jr., 41, who was found unresponsive in his cell on April 24, 2025. Security staff initiated life-saving measures immediately, followed by medical staff intervention. Brownsville EMS continued care upon arrival but declared Gray deceased at 6:50 p.m.

Gray was serving a 4-to-8-year sentence for a firearms-related conviction from Berks County and had been incarcerated at SCI Fayette since August 12, 2024.

Per standard protocol, the Pennsylvania State Police have been informed and are conducting an investigation into the incident. Additionally, the Fayette County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.

Superintendent Tina Walker confirmed that Gray’s next-of-kin has been notified. Further details regarding the case are pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
