PITTSBURGH, PA — Visitors to Point State Park will see upgraded walkways, improved lighting, and an earlier return of the park’s iconic fountain following the completion of a $3.4 million renovation project ahead of major events in 2026.

What This Means for You

  • Park improvements are complete ahead of schedule and now open to the public
  • The fountain is operating earlier than usual this season
  • Upgrades aim to prepare for large crowds during the NFL Draft and America’s 250th anniversary

Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis and Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn visited the park Tuesday to mark the completion of the first phase of improvements and turn on the fountain ahead of its typical seasonal schedule.

What Was Upgraded

The project included repairs and improvements across the 36-acre park, including walkways, utilities, and landscaped areas.

Crews also addressed leaks and upgraded lighting at the fountain, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2024.

Additional work included improvements to the City Side Lawn, parking areas, and flag bastion, along with new and refreshed landscaping throughout the park.

Officials said the work was completed months ahead of the original spring 2026 timeline.

“Today’s announcement is only the beginning of what we’re doing to upgrade this park and Downtown Pittsburgh that will benefit the entire region for years to come,” Davis said.

Preparing for Major Events

The upgrades are intended to improve safety and visitor experience as Pittsburgh prepares to host large-scale events, including the NFL Draft and the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Officials expect hundreds of thousands of visitors to gather at the park during the draft, scheduled for late April.

“Point State Park is ready to welcome thousands of visitors in the coming weeks and throughout this year’s celebration of our nation’s 250th birthday,” Dunn said.

Part of Larger Revitalization Effort

The project is part of a broader 10-year plan launched in October 2024 to revitalize downtown Pittsburgh through investments in housing, public spaces, and infrastructure.

The plan includes an additional $32.9 million in future upgrades at Point State Park, including further improvements to the fountain and expanded recreational features.

Officials said the broader effort has attracted nearly $600 million in public and private investment and is expected to create more than 3,500 construction jobs over the next four years.

Economic and Tourism Impact

State officials said investments in parks and outdoor recreation support Pennsylvania’s $20.4 billion outdoor economy, which accounts for more than 177,000 jobs statewide.

The park, located where the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers meet, serves as both a historic landmark and a central gathering space for events and recreation.

Local leaders said the upgrades position the park to handle increased tourism while providing long-term benefits for residents.

“The timing of the revitalization efforts couldn’t be better,” said VisitPittsburgh President and CEO Jarad Bachar, noting the park’s role in showcasing the city to a national audience.
