HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania is making significant strides in clean energy adoption through its Solar for Schools grant program. Nearly $22.5 million in funding will be distributed to 73 schools across the state for the installation of solar panels, marking a milestone in efforts to reduce costs, promote sustainability, and address climate challenges.

The Solar for Schools program, introduced by State Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler, D-Phila., in 2024, aims to alleviate school funding issues and combat rising utility expenses while fostering clean energy adoption. “I’m so happy for these schools and excited to see representation from nearly every corner of the state,” Fiedler said. “This program offers flexibility to meet each school’s unique needs and make the most of their strengths.”

Each school will receive up to $500,000 to cover the initial costs of installing solar panels. This includes expenses for equipment, permits, utility connections, and energy storage. Not only will these projects contribute to a greener energy infrastructure, but they are also projected to save school districts millions of dollars over their operational lifespan.

The program’s broad bipartisan support highlights its importance to Pennsylvania’s future. “The Solar for Schools program is a smart investment in both our classrooms and our energy future,” said State Sen. Lynda Culver, R-Columbia/Luzerne/Montour/Northumberland/Snyder. “By reducing utility expenses, more funding can go directly to supporting students and teachers.”

The initiative has also garnered support from labor unions, environmental advocates, and community leaders. Robert S. Bair, president of the Pennsylvania Building Trades Council, underscored its significance for job creation, stating, “These projects will open up doors for workers across the state. Energy jobs are crucial in Pennsylvania, and they must play a leading role in emerging industries like solar.”

Environmental leaders echoed these sentiments. Katie Blume, political and legislative director of Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania, noted, “This program lowers costs for taxpayers, creates jobs, and provides clean energy produced right here in Pennsylvania. It’s a win for everyone.”

The pilot program received overwhelming interest, with 88 applications totaling over $88 million submitted for the initial $25 million budget allocation. Shannon Crooker, Pennsylvania director of Generation180, highlighted the state’s rising status in renewable energy adoption. “Pennsylvania is now a Top 10 state for solar in K-12 schools,” she said. “Programs like Solar for Schools empower schools to take control of their energy needs and start saving immediately.”

Reflecting the program’s success, Gov. Josh Shapiro proposed an additional $25 million for Solar for Schools in his February budget address. Fiedler and other advocates are optimistic about its continued funding, citing significant demand and the program’s ability to positively impact both students and taxpayers.

By aligning financial relief for schools with clean energy priorities, Pennsylvania’s Solar for Schools initiative is setting a precedent for how states can tackle critical challenges with innovative and bipartisan solutions.
