HARRISBURG, PA — On April 16, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), led by Secretary Rick Siger, recognized remarkable achievements in municipal governance during the 29th Annual Governor’s Awards for Local Government Excellence. The ceremony celebrated the efforts of three counties, six municipalities, one organization, and nine dedicated individuals who have significantly improved their communities.

Governor Josh Shapiro praised the honorees’ commitment, stating, “The individuals, municipalities, counties, and organizations that we are honoring today work passionately to ‘get stuff done’ by improving public services and making their communities better. Their collective work has made a difference in the health, safety, and quality of life of families and individuals across Pennsylvania.”

Coinciding with Pennsylvania Local Government Day, the event emphasized the critical role of strong, active local governance. Lt. Governor Austin Davis lauded the recipients, adding, “It’s important to celebrate the dedicated individuals who are working, day in and day out, at the local level to make Pennsylvania’s communities safer, healthier, and more vibrant.”

Key highlights included awards for notable initiatives such as Wright Township’s achievements in community partnerships, Indiana County’s health and wellness programs, and Milton Borough’s innovative governmental practices. The City of Scranton also received the prestigious 2024 DCED Secretary’s Award for Municipal Excellence. This accolade highlights Scranton’s efforts to enhance quality of life through public-private partnerships, earning an investment-grade credit rating, and directing over $5 million into small business development.

The Shapiro Administration knows that creating a vibrant community goes hand-in-hand with economic growth, and is thrilled to recognize Scranton for all the hard work it has done to position itself for a brighter future,” he said.
