HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania anglers can now reel in their 2026 fishing licenses, launch permits, and gift vouchers, as the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission opened sales for the upcoming season — offering new options, digital conveniences, and a limited-edition collectible sure to spark competition among outdoor enthusiasts.
Licenses and permits purchased now are valid immediately and remain active for up to 13 months, from December 1, 2025, through December 31, 2026. Customers can buy annual or multi-year options online at HuntFish.pa.gov or in person at one of nearly 700 retail license agents statewide.
All documents can be printed at home or stored digitally on a smart device, which serves as proof of purchase. Shoppers can also opt into automatic renewals, a feature that has become increasingly popular as anglers rush to prepare for spring trout season, which begins statewide on April 4, 2026.
The PFBC is again offering popular add-ons — including Trout, Lake Erie, and Trout/Lake Erie Combo permits — as well as gift vouchers. A highly sought-after collectible fishing license button also returns for 2026, featuring the distinctive coloring of the state fish, the Brook Trout. Only 10,000 buttons will be produced, each individually numbered and mailed to buyers.
Anglers who purchase licenses in person may receive a printed copy of the 2026 Fishing Summary/Boating Handbook. A digital version of the publication will be available January 1, 2026, on the PFBC website. Printed copies may arrive at retail locations throughout early December, and availability may vary.
The Commission also encourages anglers to support conservation efforts through voluntary permits for Bass, Musky, Wild Trout/Enhanced Waters, and Habitat/Waterways Conservation. These optional permits do not grant additional fishing privileges, but all proceeds fund specific programs. Since 2019, voluntary permit sales have generated more than $815,000 for special conservation projects.
Youth under age 16 do not need a fishing license, but must obtain either a Voluntary Youth License or a free Mentored Youth Fishing Permit to participate in special youth opportunities, including the statewide Mentored Youth Trout Fishing Day on March 28, 2026.
As a user-funded agency, the PFBC operates without Pennsylvania General Fund tax dollars, relying instead on revenue from fishing licenses, permits, boating registrations, and related fees.
The agency also urged anglers and boaters to prioritize safety. From November 1 through April 30, boaters on vessels under 16 feet — including kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards — must wear life jackets. The PFBC recommends life jackets for ice fishing as well.
Key 2026 dates include Mentored Youth Trout Day on March 28, the statewide trout season opener on April 4, and the ongoing cold-weather life jacket requirement through April 30.
