HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is urging consumers to immediately discard Byers Organic Dairy brand raw milk purchased between July 8 and July 10, 2025, following the discovery of contamination with Shigatoxin-producing E. coli bacteria.

The affected milk, sold in plastic half-gallon and gallon containers, was distributed directly from the farm’s store at 10139 Church Hill Road in Mercersburg, Franklin County. The specific products carry sell-by dates of July 22 and July 23, 2025.

Routine sampling confirmed the presence of the dangerous bacteria, prompting swift action by the Department. While the store has removed the milk from its shelves, it does not have a list of customers who made purchases, raising concerns about potential exposure.

Shigatoxin-producing E. coli can cause serious illness, including severe diarrhea, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and sepsis. Those most at risk include young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Currently, no illnesses have been reported in connection to this raw milk. However, officials urge anyone who consumed the product and begins experiencing symptoms to contact their healthcare provider promptly.

Consumers are reminded that raw milk, which is not pasteurized, carries inherent food safety risks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides additional information for those considering or consuming raw dairy products.
