Life-Sentence Inmate Dies at SCI Camp Hill, State Police Investigate

CAMP HILL, PA — Pennsylvania authorities are investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill, prison officials said.

SCI Camp Hill Superintendent Lindsy Kendall said inmate James Campbell, 46, was discovered unresponsive and prison staff immediately began life-saving measures until facility medical personnel arrived. Lower Allen EMS responded and continued advanced life support efforts, but Campbell was pronounced dead at 1:32 p.m., Kendall said.

Campbell was serving a life sentence for murder from Delaware County and had been housed at SCI Camp Hill since October 17, 2023.

In accordance with state policy, Kendall said Pennsylvania State Police were notified and will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Cumberland County Coroner’s Office.

Campbell’s next of kin has been notified, according to the Department of Corrections.
