HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity is urging football fans and big game partygoers across the Commonwealth to take a quick timeout from snacks and commercials to search for missing money, saying more than $31 million in unclaimed property is tied to football-themed names and phrases.
Treasury officials said individuals, businesses, and organizations with names that include words such as Seahawks, Patriots, Seattle, New, England, Drake, Maye, Sam, Darnold, Football, Game, Wings, Pizza, Halftime, and Touchdown collectively have millions of dollars waiting to be claimed.
With no Pennsylvania team competing in this year’s championship matchup, Garrity said she is instead rooting for residents who may be owed a share of the roughly $5 billion in unclaimed property currently safeguarded by the Treasury Department. She noted that more than one in ten Pennsylvanians is owed unclaimed funds and that searching the database takes only moments.
A simple online search could result in a financial windfall, with Treasury reporting that the average unclaimed property claim exceeds $1,000. Since taking office in 2021, Garrity said her department has returned more than $1 billion in unclaimed property to rightful owners.
Unclaimed property can include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stocks, insurance proceeds, and other financial assets. In some cases, it may also involve tangible items such as the contents of safe deposit boxes.
Residents can search for unclaimed property at any time by visiting patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property, where Treasury officials say claims can often be initiated and processed quickly.
Treasury encouraged Pennsylvanians to check the database not only for themselves, but also for family members, businesses, and organizations that may be unaware funds are being held in their name.
