HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania Dave Sunday has joined a coalition of 16 state attorneys general in launching an investigation into major technology companies over what they call deceptive claims about being powered entirely by renewable energy.
In a letter sent this week to Microsoft, Meta, Google, and Amazon, the coalition accused the companies of misleading consumers by overstating their reliance on green power while masking continued dependence on traditional energy sources such as coal and natural gas.
“Big Tech is in our homes and hands every single day, so we must hold them to the highest standard of transparency and truth,” Sunday said. “What we have found is that Big Tech is making false claims of being ‘green.’ These false claims neglect natural power resources, including coal and gas resources that are power and economic drivers across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”
The attorneys general argue that reliance on purchased certificates to offset emissions does not equate to actual reductions. They warned that, beyond misleading consumers, tech companies are pressuring utilities to move away from fossil-fuel baseload power, potentially threatening grid stability.
The letter was led by Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen and joined by Sunday along with attorneys general from Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
