CHESTER, PA — Chester Water Authority (CWA) has long been a trusted community partner, delivering clean, safe, and affordable water. CWA’s commitment to the community doesn’t stop at the tap. With over 2,000 acres under its care and a deep-rooted dedication to conservation, CWA is also a powerful environmental steward in the region, and its latest initiative is nothing short of remarkable.
In early May, CWA teamed up with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay to plant 13,750 trees and shrubs across nearly 53 acres of land surrounding the Octoraro Reservoir. Their goal was to further enhance a riparian buffer—a protective green zone that filters pollutants, stabilizes stream banks, and provides habitat for wildlife. They did it all in less than two weeks!
“This project reflects our mission to protect the land that protects our water,” said CWA Darryl Jenkins, Executive Manager. “Environmental stewardship isn’t a side project for CWA—it’s at the heart of what we do every day.”
This new buffer strengthens the health of the watershed and enhances water quality for thousands of residents.
After the Octoraro Reservoir opened in 1951, CWA planted 30,000 trees per year for a dozen years to create the forest that currently surrounds the reservoir. Beyond the reservoir, CWA safeguards forests, wetlands, and meadows teeming with life—from bald eagles and herons to deer and wild turkeys. Visitors can even catch a glimpse of this biodiversity in real time via CWA’s wildlife cam.
Through hands-on conservation, land management, and thoughtful partnerships, CWA embodies the best of environmental stewardship—caring for the natural resources we all depend on. Every tree planted and acre preserved reflects a commitment to sustainability, community, and the long-term health of our region.
