WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Veterans Affairs announced it is awarding $84 million in grants to 176 organizations nationwide to help Veterans who are homeless or at risk of losing their housing.
Half of the funding — $42 million — will support legal services for Veterans through the VA’s Legal Services for Homeless Veterans and Veterans At-Risk for Homelessness program. The grants will fund assistance with eviction prevention, child custody cases, estate planning, benefits claims, and defense in criminal matters such as warrants or fines.
The remaining $42 million will go to the VA’s Grant and Per Diem program, financing about 100 case manager positions. These caseworkers will help Veterans with housing searches, home visits to ensure stability, and access to educational and support services that promote long-term independence.
“No one who served our nation in uniform should go without shelter,” VA Secretary Doug Collins said. “These grants will provide crucial support and services to help thousands of Veterans on their journey back to self-sufficiency.”
The latest awards build on the VA’s broader push to reduce Veteran homelessness, an effort that has combined permanent housing placements, financial assistance, and stronger community partnerships in recent years.
