WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced it has guaranteed its 29 millionth home loan since the program’s creation in 1944, highlighting continued demand and growth in support for Veterans and service members.
The milestone was reached on August 5 with a $235,000 home purchase in Maryland by a Navy Veteran. The achievement comes amid a 19% increase in loan processing this year compared with the same period in 2024.
Created under the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly known as the G.I. Bill, the VA’s Home Loan Guaranty Program has provided nearly $4 trillion in loan guarantees over its history. Today, nearly four million service members and Veterans maintain active VA-backed home loans.
The program enables private lenders to offer loans without requiring a down payment or mortgage insurance, easing the path to homeownership. VA Secretary Doug Collins called it “one of the most effective federal programs in history,” noting its long record of helping Veterans achieve stability and opportunity.
