VA Hospitals Earn High Marks in Federal Quality Ratings

United States Department of Veterans Affairs

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Veterans Affairs reported that more than three-fourths of its hospitals earned four- or five-star ratings in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) 2025 hospital quality assessments.

The CMS star system measures hospital performance across five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. A five-star rating represents the highest level of performance.

In the latest results, 77% of VA hospitals receiving an Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating achieved four or five stars, and none received a one-star rating. Additionally, more than 90% of rated VA hospitals maintained or improved upon their 2024 scores.

“These ratings highlight the excellent care VA hospitals provide,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “Our job is to continue raising the bar for customer service and convenience throughout the department, so VA works better for the Veterans, families, caregivers and survivors we are charged with serving.”

The strong ratings come alongside wider departmental reforms and expansions. The VA has reduced its backlog of benefits claims by more than one-third since January 2025, processed a record 2.52 million disability claims so far in fiscal year 2025, and opened 16 new clinics to broaden access to care. The department has also committed $800 million to infrastructure upgrades, expanded options for Veterans to seek non-VA care, and housed more than 37,500 homeless Veterans in the current fiscal year.

Further administrative changes include accelerated implementation of a modernized electronic health record system, efforts to recover millions in duplicate billing, and adjustments to survivor benefits processes. The VA also ended diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, redirected those funds, and shifted policies on treatments for gender dysphoria.

Together, these moves underscore an ongoing effort by the VA to enhance care quality, improve efficiency, and strengthen services for Veterans nationwide.
