VA Expands Burial Benefits for Veterans Receiving Hospice Care at Home

US Department of Veterans Affairs

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently announced a temporary expansion of burial benefits for certain Veterans, marking a significant change aimed at better honoring those who choose to spend their final days at home. This update follows the recent passage of the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act.

Under the new provisions, Veterans discharged from VA medical or nursing care who then transition to VA-provided hospice care at home—and who pass away between July 1, 2025, and October 1, 2026—will now be eligible for full VA burial allowances. Previously, many Veterans in this situation did not qualify for these full burial benefits, creating gaps in support for families.

VA Secretary Doug Collins emphasized the agency’s commitment to fully implementing the provisions of the Dole Act, describing the expanded burial benefits as an important step in ensuring that Veterans can receive care and dignity consistent with their wishes. “We’re excited to offer this expanded benefit, which better supports Veterans who choose to spend their final days at home, surrounded by their loved ones,” Collins stated.

The Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act addresses various gaps in Veterans’ services, with this burial benefit expansion designed specifically to support end-of-life choices that prioritize comfort and family presence.

The VA is urging families and caregivers of Veterans who receive hospice care at home following discharge from VA medical or nursing facilities to reach out to their local VA offices for information on eligibility and to learn how to apply for these newly expanded burial benefits.

This policy change represents a broader effort by the VA to enhance support systems and provide more comprehensive assistance to Veterans and their families during some of life’s most challenging moments.
