WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of the Interior has announced significant steps to fast-track domestic critical mineral production by incorporating key projects into the FAST-41 program. This initiative aligns with President Donald J. Trump’s directive to enhance American energy independence and fortify critical supply chains.
FAST-41, established under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, offers a streamlined permitting process for infrastructure projects. By reducing bureaucratic inefficiencies, it promotes quicker environmental reviews and improves coordination among federal agencies. Acting Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management Adam Suess stated, “For too long, duplicative processes and regulatory paralysis have delayed the development of the minerals America needs to power everything from national defense systems to smartphones. By cutting red tape and increasing accountability, we’re making it clear that under President Trump, the United States is serious about being a global leader in critical minerals.”
The initiative supports Executive Order 14241, emphasizing the need to expedite infrastructure and energy projects critical to national security and economic stability. The program adds five mineral projects to its roster, including lithium and copper mines in Nevada and Utah, a phosphate mine in Idaho, and more. These additions will now feature on the FAST-41 dashboard to improve public transparency and accountability.
The United States currently imports a substantial amount of critical minerals, leaving the economy exposed to potential geopolitical risks. While domestic reserves remain abundant, the permitting process, often extending to a decade, has hindered production. For comparison, countries like Canada and Australia complete similar processes in as little as two to five years, attracting more investment and solidifying leadership in mineral supply chains.
Projects under the FAST-41 program remain subject to all existing environmental laws, ensuring resources are developed responsibly while engaging tribal and local communities. The effort aims to provide long-term security and economic growth, with a focused commitment to reducing U.S. dependence on foreign sources.
Interior’s actions reflect administration priorities to bolster national security through domestic production, supporting future technological growth and job creation. With clearer timelines and streamlined reviews, the United States is poised for a stronger, self-reliant mineral supply strategy.
