WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal funding will provide $8.47 million to support public transit operations in the Philadelphia region as the city prepares to host six matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
What This Means for You
- Federal funding will support increased public transit service in the Philadelphia region during the World Cup.
- More than 500,000 visitors are expected for matches at Lincoln Financial Field.
- Transit agencies such as SEPTA may use the funds to expand service and manage increased ridership.
U.S. Sen. John Fetterman announced the funding this week, saying the allocation will help public transportation agencies manage the surge in passengers expected during the international soccer tournament.
The funding was included in the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill. According to Fetterman’s office, he joined a bipartisan group of senators to secure more than $100 million nationally to support transit operations in World Cup host cities, including $8,474,327 for the Philadelphia region.
“I’m proud to have secured critical funds to support our commonwealth’s public transit needs as the biggest soccer stage in the world heads to Philadelphia,” Fetterman said.
Preparing for World Cup Visitors
Philadelphia is expected to see a significant increase in visitors during the tournament, with more than half a million people anticipated to attend six matches scheduled in the city.
Lincoln Financial Field will host World Cup games between June 14 and July 4.
Officials said the funding will help transit agencies increase service and maintain reliable transportation options for residents and visitors traveling to games and other events.
Transit Agencies Plan for Increased Demand
Regional transit systems, including the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, are expected to experience higher ridership levels during the event.
SEPTA General Manager Scott A. Sauer said the agency is preparing to handle increased travel demand while continuing to serve regular riders.
“SEPTA is grateful to the region’s Congressional Delegation for recognizing the vital role public transit will play in moving residents and visitors throughout our city and region during the World Cup and the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations,” Sauer said.
Officials said the funding will support operational needs and service increases aimed at ensuring transportation systems can accommodate the influx of visitors during the international event.
