BALTIMORE, MD — More than 100 million Americans have created personal My Social Security accounts, the Social Security Administration said, a milestone the agency described as a key marker in its push to move more services online and reduce reliance on in-person and phone-based transactions.
The free, secure online portal provides round-the-clock access to a range of Social Security services for people who receive benefits as well as those who do not, according to the agency. With a my Social Security account, users can request a replacement Social Security card, manage benefits or estimate future benefits, request replacement documents, check the status of pending applications, and receive personalized notifications.
The platform also provides access to an individual’s most recent Social Security Statement, which includes benefit estimates and a summary of earnings in a standardized format. The agency said tax season is a common time for people to use the portal to review their detailed earnings record.
Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the growth in accounts reflects demand for immediate access to services at any hour, and he said the agency is aiming to improve customer service across online, phone, and in-person channels.
The SSA said the milestone comes as part of a broader “digital-first” strategy focused on technology upgrades and process changes intended to improve accessibility and speed of service. The agency also said the website now provides 24/7 access to my Social Security accounts, noting that the site previously had scheduled weekly downtime totaling 29 hours.
