WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development last week spotlighted its work to expand affordable housing and revitalize communities, with officials touring Opportunity Zones in Indiana, announcing a major Tribal housing summit, and hosting the agency’s annual Innovative Housing Showcase on the National Mall.
On Sept. 15, HUD Great Lakes Regional Administrator Duey Stroebel toured the Indianapolis Eastside Opportunity Zone and Valley House Flats in Brookville, one of the state’s first projects under the Opportunity Zone initiative. The visit highlighted how public-private partnerships are driving investment and revitalization in overlooked communities.
“Opportunity Zones are an incredible change agent brought forth by Secretary Turner and the Trump Administration,” Stroebel said. He announced plans to host an OZ 2.0 Launch Event on Sept. 30 for regional partners.
HUD Secretary Scott Turner credited Opportunity Zones with lifting more than one million Americans out of poverty, attracting $89 billion in investment, creating more than 500,000 jobs, and adding more than 300,000 new residential addresses. The initiative was originally created under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and recently expanded through the One Big Beautiful Bill signed into law in July.
On Sept. 17, Turner hosted HUD’s Tribal Intergovernmental Advisory Committee in Washington, D.C., reaffirming the agency’s commitment to supporting housing in Indian Country. He also announced that HUD will host a National Tribal Housing Summit Nov. 4–6 in Crystal City, Virginia, and unveiled $220 million in new funding for Tribal housing and infrastructure projects.
“Since day one, I have stated my commitment to make Tribal communities a priority here at HUD,” Turner said. “I am encouraged by the impact Tribes are making to address housing needs.”
The week concluded with HUD’s Innovative Housing Showcase on Sept. 19, which drew more than 5,000 visitors to the National Mall. Themed “The American Home is the American Dream,” the event highlighted construction technologies, affordability strategies, and public-private partnerships aimed at lowering housing costs.
“Homeownership is central to the American Dream,” Turner said, emphasizing that housing is the foundation for independence and prosperity.
The showcase featured remarks from faith-based leaders on disaster recovery, a fireside chat with Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), and demonstrations of modular housing technology. President Donald Trump also released a video celebrating the event, underscoring his administration’s focus on affordable homeownership.
HUD officials said the events reflect the department’s broader effort to strengthen housing opportunities nationwide while supporting innovation, tribal partnerships, and community-driven investment.
