WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), led by Secretary Brooke L. Rollins, undertook a series of impactful initiatives last week, ranging from bolstering small family farms to enhancing wildfire coordination and reforming Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) purchases.

During a visit to Nebraska on May 19, Secretary Rollins, alongside Governor Jim Pillen and other local leaders, unveiled the Farmers First agenda aimed at ensuring the viability of small family farms. “Our family-owned farms and ranches are at the heart of agriculture in America and are the backbone of the economy in states like Nebraska,” said Governor Pillen. The agenda promises regulatory relief, expanded markets, and greater support for small-scale producers. The USDA has already distributed over $504 million in Nebraska through its Emergency Commodity Assistance Program for the 2024 crop year.

Secretary Rollins also addressed wildfire preparedness alongside Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. On May 20, the two officials signed a joint memo to enhance coordination for combating wildfires during what is expected to be an above-normal fire season. Secretary Burgum emphasized, “Our mission is clear: protect lives, defend critical infrastructure, and preserve the natural landscapes that sustain our way of life.” The USDA also issued internal directives to bolster operational readiness, encouraging cross-departmental support for fire response efforts.

On May 23, Secretary Rollins announced the USDA’s plan to purchase $67 million in fresh seafood, fruits, and vegetables through Section 32 of the Agriculture Act of 1935, benefiting both domestic producers and food banks. Additionally, Secretary Rollins approved waivers altering SNAP rules in Nebraska, Indiana, and Iowa. These waivers will exclude certain items, such as sodas and candy, from SNAP eligibility starting in 2026 as part of USDA’s Make America Healthy Again initiative. “President Trump has given our nation a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change the health trajectory for our entire country,” said Secretary Rollins.

These actions reflect the USDA’s commitment to supporting American farmers, protecting natural resources, and promoting public health. Through these policies, the department aims to drive long-term sustainability and prosperity in agriculture and rural communities.
