WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal regulators are forming a new healthcare task force aimed at cracking down on anti-competitive practices and consumer harm across the medical industry.
What This Means for You
- Federal enforcement could target higher healthcare and drug costs
- New oversight may address deceptive insurance and treatment practices
- More coordinated action across agencies is expected
Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson directed staff Friday to create a Healthcare Task Force that will coordinate enforcement and policy efforts across multiple divisions within the agency.
The task force will bring together the FTC’s bureaus responsible for competition, consumer protection, and economic analysis, along with policy and technology offices, to focus on healthcare-related investigations and enforcement.
What the Task Force Will Do
According to the directive, the task force will:
- Lead enforcement actions and policy initiatives on healthcare issues
- Coordinate investigations across the agency
- Identify legal cases where the FTC can weigh in through court filings
- Monitor emerging risks and set new enforcement priorities
The group is also expected to collaborate with other federal agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice.
Focus on Competition and Consumer Protection
Federal officials said the effort is intended to address concerns about rising healthcare costs, limited competition, and misleading business practices in the industry.
The initiative follows recent FTC actions targeting pharmacy benefit managers, healthcare mergers, and deceptive insurance marketing.
In one case, the agency reached a settlement with a pharmacy benefit manager that officials said could reduce out-of-pocket insulin costs by billions of dollars over time.
The FTC has also challenged proposed mergers involving medical device and eye care companies and secured financial recoveries from companies accused of misleading consumers about health coverage.
Next Steps
The Healthcare Task Force will begin coordinating enforcement and policy efforts immediately, with plans to expand participation to additional federal and law enforcement partners.
