WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal health authorities are investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to frozen sprouted beans sold under the Deep brand, prompting an urgent recall and public health warning. As of Thursday, 11 individuals across 10 states have been infected with the same strain of Salmonella. Four have been hospitalized. No fatalities have been reported.
On July 16, Chetak LLC Group issued a voluntary recall of its Deep brand frozen sprouted moong (mung) beans and sprouted moth (mat) beans, both sold in 16-ounce packages. The recalled products include a range of lot codes printed on the back of the packaging: IN 24330, 25072, 25108, 24353, 25171, 24297, 25058, 25078, 24291, 25107, 24354, and 24292.
Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advise consumers and businesses not to eat, sell, or serve the affected products. Consumers are urged to discard any recalled beans or return them to the place of purchase. Surfaces and utensils that may have come into contact with the recalled items should be thoroughly washed with hot, soapy water or cleaned using a dishwasher to prevent cross-contamination.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure. While most recover without treatment within a week, the illness can be severe—particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The CDC and FDA continue to monitor the outbreak as they work with state health departments to identify additional cases and trace the source of contamination. Businesses are reminded to follow FDA-sanctioned sanitation protocols and cease distribution of the affected items.
Consumers experiencing symptoms of severe illness are advised to seek medical attention immediately. For state-specific inquiries, residents should contact their local health departments.
