WASHINGTON, D.C. — American workers can now access a free, weeklong artificial intelligence training course via text message, part of a federal effort to expand basic AI skills without requiring internet access or computers.

What This Means for You

  • You can enroll in a free AI course by texting “READY” to 20202
  • The course takes about 10 minutes a day over seven days
  • No computer or internet access is required to participate

The U.S. Department of Labor launched the “Make America AI-Ready” initiative, a text-based learning program designed to introduce workers to core artificial intelligence concepts and practical uses.

Artificial intelligence, often referred to as AI, is technology that enables computers to perform tasks such as analyzing data, recognizing patterns, and generating content that typically require human intelligence.

How the Program Works

Participants receive daily lessons and short challenges delivered entirely by text message, allowing them to complete the course in about 10 minutes per day over a seven-day period.

Officials said the format is intended to reach workers who may not have reliable internet access or access to a laptop, making the program broadly accessible.

The initiative was developed through a public-private partnership between the Labor Department and education technology company Arist.

What Participants Will Learn

The course follows five core areas outlined in the department’s AI Literacy Framework.

These include understanding how AI systems work, exploring real-world uses, learning how to give effective instructions to AI tools, evaluating the accuracy of AI-generated results, and using AI responsibly.

Officials said the program is designed as an entry point, with additional resources provided at the end for participants interested in more advanced training or AI-related careers.

Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said the initiative is intended to prepare workers for changes in the job market driven by AI adoption.

“This initiative is designed to ensure every American worker has the chance to learn foundational skills so they can benefit from the opportunities that the AI economy presents,” Chavez-DeRemer said.

Deputy Secretary Keith Sonderling said the program aims to help workers better understand how AI is shaping industries and creating new opportunities.

Next Steps

Workers can enroll by texting “READY” to 20202, and additional information is available at dol.gov/ai-ready.

Officials said phone numbers used to enroll will only be used to deliver course content and will not be shared for marketing purposes.
