FAFSA Surge Signals Easier Aid Access for Millions

US Department of Education

WASHINGTON, D.C. — More than 10 million students and families have already completed federal financial aid applications for the upcoming school year, marking a sharp increase that federal officials say reflects earlier availability and system changes.

What This Means for You

  • More students are completing financial aid forms earlier in the process
  • Updated tools provide clearer data on college costs and future earnings
  • Application changes aim to simplify filing and reduce errors

The U.S. Department of Education reported that over 10 million Free Application for Federal Student Aid forms for the 2026–27 academic year have been processed, a 17 percent increase from the previous cycle and a 487 percent increase compared to two years ago.

The FAFSA is the primary application used by students to access federal grants, loans, and other financial aid for college.

Earlier Access and System Changes

Officials said the increase follows the earliest release of the FAFSA form on record, allowing students and families to begin the process sooner.

The department also introduced updates to simplify the application, including a redesigned process that allows students to invite parents or other contributors to complete required sections using a personalized code.

Future changes will allow returning students to have key information automatically filled in based on prior applications, reducing the need to re-enter data.

New Tools for Comparing Colleges

The Department of Education also updated the College Scorecard, an online tool that provides data on college costs, graduation rates, and post-graduation earnings.

The latest update includes earnings data for students four years after completing their degrees, along with enhanced search features that allow users to compare outcomes by field of study.

An earnings indicator included in the FAFSA process highlights schools where graduates may have lower-than-expected income outcomes, giving applicants additional information when selecting institutions.

Impact on Student Decisions

Federal officials said about one in four students who saw a low-earnings indicator during the application process chose to remove that school from their list and select another option.

The agency said the tool is intended to inform decisions by providing clearer insight into potential return on investment, including expected earnings and total cost.

Fraud Prevention and Oversight

The department also reported efforts to reduce fraudulent applications, which it said resulted in more than $1 billion in savings for taxpayers in the previous year.

Next Steps

Officials said the next FAFSA cycle for the 2027–28 academic year is expected to launch by October 1, maintaining a consistent timeline for students and institutions.

Students and families can complete the FAFSA and access additional resources at StudentAid.gov.
