DOE’s Genesis Mission Taps AI Giants in Bid to Supercharge U.S. Science

United States Department of Energy

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy on Thursday announced new agreements with 24 organizations to help launch the Genesis Mission, a sweeping national initiative that aims to harness artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery, bolster national security, and drive energy innovation.

The effort builds on President Donald Trump’s executive order removing barriers to American leadership in artificial intelligence and advances his America’s AI Action Plan, which calls for reducing reliance on foreign adversaries while expanding the nation’s scientific and technological capacity.

Senior administration officials, industry leaders, and researchers gathered at the White House to formally kick off the initiative, marking the start of a series of public-private partnerships designed to create a scalable national AI infrastructure capable of pushing scientific research at unprecedented speed.

Assistant to the President and White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios said the Genesis Mission is intended to bring together the full breadth of the U.S. research ecosystem, from private companies and universities to nonprofits and federal laboratories.

“Harnessing cutting-edge AI for science will dramatically increase the productivity of American scientists and researchers,” Kratsios said, adding that the initiative is expected to automate experiment design, accelerate simulations, and generate predictive models that could lead to breakthroughs in energy, manufacturing, drug discovery, and other fields.

DOE Under Secretary for Science and Genesis Mission Director Dr. Darío Gil described the effort as a unifying force for the nation’s research enterprise, linking industry, academia, and the national laboratory system under a shared mission.

“These agreements help advance the President’s directive to build a national AI platform for scientific discovery and strengthen the entire U.S. research and development ecosystem,” Gil said.

The 24 organizations that have signed memorandums of understanding include some of the most influential names in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and advanced hardware. Participants range from major technology firms and chipmakers to emerging AI developers and research organizations. DOE said the agreements are architecture-agnostic and are intended to ensure broad collaboration and flexibility as the mission evolves.

Among the participating organizations are Accenture, AMD, Anthropic, Amazon Web Services, Google, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NVIDIA, OpenAI, Oracle, Palantir, xAI, and XPRIZE, among others.

According to DOE, the collaborators either responded to a federal request for information or are already engaged in active projects with the department and its national laboratories related to the Genesis Mission. The department said additional partners are expected to join as the initiative expands.

DOE officials said the Genesis Mission is designed not only to accelerate discovery science but also to ensure that the benefits of artificial intelligence extend across the country, reinforcing U.S. leadership in energy innovation and national security.

The department continues to solicit new ideas and partners through open requests for information, including initiatives focused on transformational AI models and national security applications, with submission deadlines in January 2026.
