WASHINGTON, D.C. — Nearly $1 billion in federal funding is now available to help states and local communities improve road safety, expand emergency response capabilities, and reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced $999,500,000 through its Safe Streets for All grant program, which supports projects designed to prevent serious roadway injuries and fatalities.
What the Program Funds
The grants can be used for a range of safety improvements, including upgrades to rail crossings, expanded truck parking, and redesigns of local streets to better protect pedestrians and drivers.
Funding may also support improvements that allow emergency responders to reach incidents more quickly.
Types of Grants Available
The program offers two types of funding.
Planning and Demonstration Grants help communities create or refine a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan—a local strategy outlining how to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries.
Implementation Grants fund projects that carry out those plans, targeting known safety issues such as dangerous intersections or high-risk corridors.
How Projects Are Selected
Grant recipients are chosen through a federal review process involving multiple agencies, including the Federal Highway Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Federal Transit Administration.
Officials said the collaborative approach is intended to ensure projects are grounded in data and safety best practices.
Federal Perspective
Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the funding is aimed at reducing roadway fatalities while improving everyday travel conditions.
“This grant program will cover everything from ensuring paramedics can reach you faster in an emergency to making sure kids are safer when walking to school,” Duffy said.
