Adaptive sports programs are structured physical activities tailored for individuals with disabilities, often used as a form of rehabilitation and community engagement.

Program Scope and Impact

The VA said the grant program has awarded more than $160 million since its creation, helping expand access to adaptive sports opportunities across the country.

Programs funded through the initiative include both competitive and non-competitive activities such as skiing, cycling, hunting, fishing, and team sports adapted for wheelchair use.

“Adaptive sports can be life-changing for disabled Veterans, improving strength and facilitating healing while building resilience through competition, camaraderie and achievement,” VA Secretary Doug Collins said. “These grants will create vital access to local adaptive sports programs to help Veterans stay active, engaged and connected with their communities and fellow Veterans.”
