KENNETT SQUARE, PALongwood Gardens invites visitors to celebrate Pennsylvania Native Species Day with a two-day event packed with nature-focused activities on Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17. With guided walks, expert talks, and interactive experiences, the event aims to highlight the richness and importance of preserving native plants and wildlife.

Although Pennsylvania Native Species Day officially takes place on May 20, Longwood is starting early, offering immersive programs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Meadow Garden, learn about meadow ecosystems, and connect with representatives from the Pennsylvania Native Plant Society and Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research. Participants can even take home a native plant to grow in their own gardens, while supplies last.

Special activities include a Wild Bird Walk on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., where attendees can discover bird species living in Longwood’s diverse habitats. Later, guests can join volunteers to learn how to build bluebird nesting boxes or participate in a Wildflower Walk at 2:30 p.m. to explore the more than 300 species of wildflowers thriving in Longwood’s Meadow Garden.

The Pennsylvania Native Species Day observance, introduced in 2022 by the Pennsylvania Invasive Species Council, aims to raise awareness of invasive species and highlight the value of native biodiversity. Longwood Gardens, through initiatives like this event, emphasizes the critical role native plants such as milkweed and azaleas play in supporting pollinators and maintaining ecological balance.

Whether you’re a conservationist, a nature lover, or simply curious about local ecosystems, Longwood Gardens’ celebration offers an enriching way to connect with Pennsylvania’s natural heritage. All activities are included with general garden admission.
