School, Tavern Cited in Latest Health Inspections

Food safety

WEST CHESTER, PA — The Chester County Health Department cited a school cafeteria, a West Chester meat market and an Oxford tavern for food safety and facility violations during inspections conducted March 2, officials reported.

The violations were released as part of the county’s routine inspection reports for licensed food facilities.

At Aramark at Exton Elementary School, 301 Hendricks Ave., Exton, inspectors found yogurt, turkey sandwiches and boiled eggs held at 47 to 48 degrees at the serve line, above the required maximum of 41 degrees. The report instructs staff to repair or adjust the unit and monitor temperatures.

At Colonial Village Meat Market, 929 S. High St., West Chester, inspectors cited prepackaged foods in customer self-service refrigerators for improper labeling. The report states labels must include the common food name, ingredients and sub-ingredients, allergens, net weight and date.

Inspectors also reported that ready-to-eat deli salads held more than 24 hours were not date marked as required and that newly installed drywall near a mop sink and rear storage offices must be painted and finished with base coving.

At Octoraro Hotel & Tavern, 2 S. Third St., Oxford, a food employee was observed putting on single-use gloves without first washing hands, according to the report. The employee was instructed on proper handwashing procedures during the inspection.

Inspectors also cited a sanitizer dispenser at a three-bay sink for operating below the required chemical concentration and a beverage cooler in the downstairs bar area registering 48 degrees. The report states the refrigerator should not be used for time- and temperature-controlled foods until serviced.

Additional violations at the Oxford establishment included a soiled table-mounted can opener, grease and grime buildup under and behind the cookline, unclean floor drains, and damage to wall paneling near cooking equipment.

County officials note that inspections represent a snapshot of conditions at the time of the visit and may not reflect long-term compliance.
