WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, U.S. Senators Dave McCormick (R-PA) and John Fetterman (D-PA) introduced S. Res. 288, a bipartisan resolution denouncing the rising wave of violent antisemitic attacks across the country. Backed by 34 Senate co-sponsors, the resolution reflects a unified stance against anti-Jewish hatred amidst a series of high-profile incidents.

The resolution cites key acts of violence, including the attempted murder in Boulder, Colorado, the arson attack on the Pennsylvania Governor’s residence, and the murder of two Israeli embassy staffers outside the Capitol Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. These devastating occurrences echo the rising concerns over antisemitic hatred.

“Antisemitism has no place in America,” said Senator McCormick. “Since October 7, 2023, the Jewish community has faced unprecedented and persistent antisemitic hate and violence. This hatred cannot stand. Living in Squirrel Hill, right around the corner from the site of the devastating Tree of Life Synagogue attack in 2018, really brings this issue home for me. Protecting my friends and neighbors, and all Jewish people across the country, must be a national priority. I’m proud to team up with Senator Fetterman, and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, to unequivocally condemn the alarming surge in antisemitic hate across the country.”

Echoing McCormick’s urgency, Senator Fetterman emphasized the moral stakes. “Amid a despicable rise in antisemitism, including the hateful arson at Governor Shapiro’s home in Pennsylvania, the shocking violence in Boulder, and the deadly attack on the Israeli embassy staff in D.C., we are starkly reminded that silence is complicity. These appalling attacks on our Jewish communities are not isolated events. After eleven lives were stolen at the Tree of Life massacre in 2018, I’ve felt an even stronger moral obligation to confront antisemitism wherever it appears and stand united against hate.”

The resolution emphasizes Congress’ commitment to condemning antisemitism and supporting the safety of Jewish Americans. Congressman Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) has introduced a companion resolution in the House. “Jewish Americans are being threatened, harassed, and attacked simply because of their faith, and that is completely unacceptable,” Van Drew stated.

Senators supporting the resolution come from across the political spectrum, including Michael Bennet (D-CO), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Shelley Capito (R-WV), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). The broad bipartisan backing signals a shared belief in combating hate and ensuring action against antisemitism.

The introduction of this resolution underscores the urgency and commitment to standing against religious intolerance and acts of hate, reaffirming the nation’s promise of safety and dignity for all communities.
