Pielli Introduces Bill to Strengthen Protections Against Unlawful Searches and Seizures

WEST CHESTER, PAState Representative Chris Pielli, D-Chester, has introduced legislation aimed at reinforcing constitutional safeguards against unlawful searches and seizures in Pennsylvania. The proposal seeks to create a legal pathway for individuals to take action against anyone—whether acting under government authority or not—who violates their rights through unlawful detention, violence, intimidation, or coercion.

Pielli said the measure responds to an increasing number of complaints involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents allegedly conducting warrantless and, in some cases, violent arrests of individuals who are lawful residents or U.S. citizens. These incidents, according to Pielli, have resulted in wrongful detainments lasting several days in immigration facilities.

“The eyes of history are upon us as to whether we will continue to defend our sacred rights and liberties,” Pielli stated. “As state lawmakers, we have a duty to protect the residents of the Commonwealth from illegal and violent overreach by any government officials now, just as we did over two centuries ago.”

If enacted, the legislation would expand accountability by allowing civil recourse for Pennsylvanians who experience unlawful interference with their constitutional rights. Pielli said he hopes the measure will reaffirm both state and federal commitments to personal liberty and due process.
