MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the temporary closure of the Five-Points Intersection in Montgomery Township, Montgomery County, as part of a $14.2 million project to improve traffic flow and roadway safety.
The intersection of Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) will be closed to all traffic from 11:00 PM on Sunday, July 13, until 5:00 AM on Monday, July 14. The schedule is weather dependent, and significant delays and backups are expected.
PennDOT has outlined detour routes for the closure:
- Southbound Route 309: Drivers will follow Broad Street west to Main Street/Welsh Road east, returning to Route 309.
- Northbound Route 309: Traffic will use the U.S. 202 Bypass north to County Line Road back to Route 309.
- Westbound Route 463 (Horsham Road): Motorists will travel via the U.S. 202 Bypass and County Line Road.
- Eastbound Route 463 (Cowpath Road): Traffic will detour west on Broad Street and east on Main Street/Welsh Road back to Route 309.
- Southbound Business U.S. 202: Drivers will use County Line Road east and the U.S. 202 Bypass north to reconnect with Route 309.
This closure is part of PennDOT’s broader intersection upgrade initiative. Key enhancements include the addition of three through-lanes to create a total of 18 lanes approaching the intersection, a redesign that aims to ease congestion and reduce the frequency of crashes. Additional improvements include signalization upgrades, new sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, guiderail installations, enhanced stormwater drainage, and erosion control.
The project, managed by Road-Con, Inc., of Chester County, is being financed entirely with federal funds. The upgrades are expected to bring long-term benefits by improving the safety and efficiency of the heavily trafficked intersection.
Residents and commuters are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time during this closure period.
