UT Austin Housing Project Hits Milestone, Fast-Tracking 1,000 New Beds

MALVERN, PA — A major new student housing project at The University of Texas at Austin has reached a key construction milestone, moving the campus closer to delivering more than 1,000 new undergraduate beds by fall 2027.

Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions said it has successfully “topped out” the new residence hall on Whitis Avenue, completing the building’s structural framework in partnership with The University of Texas at Austin and the 2033 Higher Education Development Foundation.

The milestone was marked October 10, 2025, with the placement of the final precast concrete panel. Construction began May 15, 2025, and the 215,000-square-foot structure was completed in less than five months using an accelerated precast concrete delivery method designed to address tight site constraints and preserve three heritage live oak trees on campus.

The building includes more than 1,200 precast panels weighing a combined 43 million pounds and nearly 600,000 thin bricks installed off-site. The heaviest single panel weighed 77,000 pounds, and if laid end to end, the floor slabs would stretch roughly 3.5 miles. Tindall supplied the precast concrete, and Andres served as the project’s contractor.

“This milestone reflects the incredible collaboration and ingenuity of our partners,” said Jeffrey Tate, vice president at Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions. “By leveraging innovative construction methods and working closely with UT Austin, we’ve delivered a structure that meets the University’s needs while respecting the campus environment.”

University officials said the project supports UT Austin’s long-term housing strategy as enrollment demand continues to grow.

“We are pleased to be one step closer to completing the undergraduate student housing project on Whitis Avenue,” said Dan Allen, associate vice president for finance and executive director for real estate planning and strategy. “This furthers UT’s commitment to providing quality, on-campus housing and an exceptional student experience.”

The residence hall is scheduled to open in fall 2027 and will feature a mix of single and double rooms, along with shared community spaces and amenities intended to support academic success and campus engagement.
