WEST CHESTER, PA — AccessLex Institute® has announced Giana O’Shaughnessy, a first-year student at the University of Oregon School of Law, as the recipient of the third annual MAX by AccessLex® Hannah R. Arterian Memorial Scholarship. The $50,000 scholarship recognizes outstanding participation in the MAX by AccessLex® Financial Foundations program, which equips law students with essential financial literacy skills.
O’Shaughnessy earned the scholarship by completing the program’s comprehensive curriculum and attending multiple MAX events designed to prepare students for financial success during and after law school. Reflecting on her experience, she said, “The financial skills I learned through MAX by AccessLex® provided me with a realistic look at budgeting after graduation – I particularly benefitted by attending the web event for public interest careers. I am more confident in my financial choices and no longer have a fear of the unknown, which can often surround finances.”
The scholarship is named in honor of Hannah R. Arterian, a former AccessLex Board member and two-term Board Chair who played a pivotal role in developing the MAX program during her tenure. Since its launch, MAX by AccessLex® has reached students at nearly 200 nonprofit and state-affiliated law schools, offering free resources such as lessons, webinars, workshops, and personalized financial coaching. Over $2.5 million in scholarships have been awarded through the program to date, with an additional $400,000 allocated annually in tuition support.
“Taking advantage of AccessLex Institute’s learning tools prepared me with financial literacy and a blueprint for the steps to take both during and after law school,” O’Shaughnessy added, emphasizing the life-changing impact of the program.
The MAX program exemplifies AccessLex Institute’s mission to support aspiring lawyers by providing crucial resources from the admissions process through licensure. The scholarship, along with the coaching and guidance offered through MAX, ensures law students are prepared to manage the financial demands of legal education and professional life.
O’Shaughnessy’s achievement highlights the program’s significant role in empowering hundreds of law students nationwide to build confident financial futures, honoring Hannah R. Arterian’s legacy as an advocate for education and opportunity.
