PENNSYLVANIA — A new survey has revealed that the one brand Pennsylvanians most wish would expand into their state isn’t a restaurant or coffee chain — it’s Publix, the Florida-based supermarket known for its spotless aisles, friendly service, and famously addictive deli subs.
MarketBeat, a financial media company, surveyed 3,011 Americans to identify which brands they most want but don’t have in their home states. In Pennsylvania, Publix topped the list, ahead of national favorites like Salt & Straw, H-E-B, and Culinary Dropout.
For many transplants from the South, Publix represents more than a grocery store. Shoppers often describe it as a “community experience” marked by personal service and consistency — qualities that have helped the chain build deep loyalty throughout the Southeast. Despite Pennsylvania’s competitive grocery market, including Wegmans, Giant, and Giant Eagle, respondents said Publix stands apart for its hospitality and regional charm.
The second most desired brand among Pennsylvanians was Salt & Straw, the Portland-based ice cream chain renowned for unconventional flavors such as Honey Lavender and Pear & Blue Cheese. The brand has built a devoted following on the West Coast but has yet to open a location in the Keystone State.
In third place was H-E-B, the Texas grocery chain celebrated for its affordability, community focus, and cult-favorite products. Rounding out the list was Culinary Dropout, an Arizona-born gastropub concept known for its live music, pretzel fondue, and laid-back social atmosphere — a concept many respondents said would thrive in Philadelphia’s restaurant scene.
The findings highlight the emotional connection consumers form with certain brands — and the unmet opportunities for expansion into new markets.
“It’s fascinating to see how much excitement a single brand can generate in a community,” said Matt Paulson, founder of MarketBeat. “These results highlight both the emotional pull of national chains and the opportunities that exist for businesses willing to expand into new regions.”
Beyond Pennsylvania, the survey revealed similar yearnings nationwide. Coloradans wished for an Aldi, Alaskans longed for a Trader Joe’s, and North Dakotans dreamed of their first IKEA.
For Pennsylvanians, however, the message was clear: when it comes to the next big brand they want to see move in, Publix reigns supreme.
