Vishay Unveils New Automotive-Grade ESD Protection Diodes With Enhanced Power Handling

Vishay Intertechnology

MALVERN, PAVishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) has announced the release of two new series of automotive-grade electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection diodes, the VGSOTxx and VGSOTxxC, designed to deliver improved thermal performance and higher power capabilities in a compact SOT-23 package.

Engineered to replace Vishay’s previous-generation GSOTxx and GSOTxxC devices, the new diodes provide peak pulse power ratings up to 540 W and support current levels up to 44 A at an 8/20 µs pulse, making them suitable for more demanding designs.

Versatility Across Industries

The VGSOTxx and VGSOTxxC series are intended for a broad range of applications, including:

  • Automotive electronics and control systems
  • Fuel cells and smart energy solutions
  • Industrial automation, motor drives, and power tools
  • Consumer electronics, appliances, and entertainment devices
  • Medical instrumentation and healthcare technology
  • Fixed and mobile telecom infrastructure
  • Military and electronic warfare systems

Flexible ESD Protection

Both series function as unidirectional ESD protection devices, while the VGSOTxxC series features a dual, common-anode configuration that can also be deployed in bidirectional applications. When additional power capacity is required, dual diodes within the VGSOTxxC components can be connected in parallel, effectively doubling surge power ratings while maintaining performance integrity.

Compliance and Quality Standards

Vishay designed the new diodes to meet rigorous quality and safety benchmarks, including:

  • ESD immunity compliant with IEC 61000-4-2 and ISO 10605 standards (±30 kV air and contact discharge)
  • AEC-Q101 human body model certification, class H3B (>8 kV)
  • RoHS compliance, halogen-free materials, and Vishay Green standards

Additionally, these devices are direct drop-in replacements for existing GSOT-series products and competing SOT-based diodes, offering manufacturers a seamless transition to higher performance without redesigning circuit layouts.

Designed for Scale and Reliability

With AEC-Q101 qualified versions available, the VGSOTxx and VGSOTxxC series align with Vishay’s automotive-grade standards, ensuring long-term reliability for mission-critical applications. By combining higher power ratings, robust ESD protection, and compatibility with existing designs, Vishay aims to provide engineers with greater flexibility and efficiency in next-generation electronic systems.
