MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) has introduced the first Automotive Grade AC line rated ceramic disc safety capacitors with a Y1 rating available in a surface-mount casing. The new Vishay BCcomponents SMDY1 Automotive Series combines a Y1 rating of 500 VAC and 1500 VDC with capacitance up to 4.7 nF, targeting next-generation electric and hybrid vehicle systems.
The capacitors are designed for EMI and RFI suppression in demanding, high-humidity environments such as on-board chargers, traction inverters, battery management systems, e-compressors, and AC/DC converters. Qualified to AEC-Q200 with PPAP support, the devices meet Class IIB humidity standards under IEC60384-14 and pass the rigorous 85/85/1000h test for reliability.
By enabling surface-mount assembly through reflow soldering, the SMDY1 series reduces production costs and simplifies design. The low, flat profile also allows for flat casings or backside PCB mounting, overcoming clearance issues associated with traditional through-hole capacitors.
RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, the capacitors feature a copper-plated ceramic disc encapsulated in flame-resistant epoxy resin, meeting UL 94 V-0 standards. They are offered in two case sizes: a C case with a 10 mm creepage distance and a D case with 14.5 mm creepage distance.
Vishay’s introduction marks a significant advancement in automotive-grade safety components, providing manufacturers with higher efficiency, reliability, and design flexibility in the rapidly growing EV and hybrid vehicle markets.
