Vishay Introduces VOx619A Series Phototransistor Optocouplers

Vishay Intertechnology

MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (NYSE: VSH) announced the release of a new series of phototransistor optocouplers designed for industrial and electronic applications requiring signal isolation and reduced power consumption.

The company said the Vishay Semiconductors VOx619A series combines a high and linear current transfer ratio with a forward current of 0.5 milliamps.

The devices are designed to operate at temperatures up to +125 degrees Celsius and are available in four package types: DIL-4, LSOP-4, SOP-4 and SSOP-4.

Vishay said the optocouplers reduce forward current by about 50 percent compared with the company’s previous-generation solution.

Lower current requirements can reduce power consumption in systems such as micro mobility devices, industrial controls, energy metering equipment, telecommunications systems and consumer electronics, according to the company.

The components are used to transmit signals with electrical isolation between circuits.

Applications include DC/DC converters, programmable logic controllers and power supplies.

The VOx619A series maintains a current transfer ratio greater than 75 percent across its operating temperature range, the company said.

Traditional optocouplers may drop to less than 50 percent of their rated transfer ratio at 25 degrees Celsius, according to Vishay.

The company said the higher temperature tolerance also extends beyond many earlier devices, which typically operate up to +110 degrees Celsius or +85 degrees Celsius.

Each device contains an infrared emitting diode optically coupled to a phototransistor detector.

Vishay said optocouplers in the DIL-4 and LSOP-4 packages offer isolation voltage ratings of 5000 VRMS and creepage and clearance distances of at least seven and eight millimeters, respectively.

The SOP-4 and SSOP-4 versions provide more compact options and offer isolation voltages of 3750 VRMS with creepage and clearance distances of at least five millimeters.

The company said the devices comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive and are halogen-free.
