MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) has unveiled the VEML4031X00, the industry’s first AEC-Q100 qualified rectangular ambient light sensor. This innovative device provides superior integration capabilities for space-constrained designs, catering to advanced automotive applications including bezel-less center control displays.
The VEML4031X00 combines an ambient light sensor with a highly sensitive IR photodiode in a compact, low-profile surface-mount package measuring just 4.38 mm by 1.45 mm with a height of 0.6 mm. Its spectral sensitivity matches that of the human eye, ensuring highly accurate measurements, while the IR channel enables light source differentiation. The sensor’s wide ambient light range of 0 lx to 172,000 lx prevents saturation in daylight conditions, and its exceptional sensitivity of 0.0026 lx/ct supports placement behind dark cover glass.
Capable of operating in temperatures from -40°C to +110°C, the VEML4031X00 is designed for various automotive applications such as display backlight controls, infotainment systems, rearview mirror dimming, interior lighting control, and heads-up displays. The sensor’s integration with an I²C interface simplifies implementation, and its interrupt function adds versatility for intelligent system designs.
Technical highlights of the VEML4031X00 include a supply voltage range of 2.5 V to 3.6 V, an I²C bus voltage range of 1.7 V to 3.6 V, and ultra-low shutdown current consumption of just 0.5 μA. Fully compliant with RoHS standards, halogen-free, and Vishay Green, the device features a Moisture Sensitivity Level of 2a and offers a floor life of up to four weeks, enhancing its durability and reliability.
