PHOENIXVILLE, PA — One of Chester County’s most treasured landmarks is getting a vital facelift. After exceeding its $200,000 fundraising goal, the Historic Colonial Theatre has begun its West Wall Preservation Project, a crucial effort to repair and protect the original 1903 structure at the heart of Phoenixville’s cultural district.
The project focuses on restoring the theatre’s west wall by repairing deteriorated brickwork and mortar while sealing the structure against future moisture damage. The work will preserve the integrity of the Colonial’s oldest and most iconic venue—an architectural and artistic mainstay that has anchored downtown Phoenixville for more than a century.
Originally built in 1902, the Colonial Theatre is the last remaining historic cinema in Phoenixville and the only one of its kind in Chester County. It remains a rare venue equipped for both 35mm and 2K digital projection, hosting live performances and screenings throughout the year.
Beyond its architectural significance, the theatre has played a defining role in the borough’s cultural evolution—from its vaudeville-era roots, when Houdini took the stage, to its cult status as the filming location for the 1958 sci-fi classic The Blob. Today, it continues to serve as both an arts hub and a key economic driver in Phoenixville’s revitalized downtown.
The restoration represents not only an investment in preserving a historic structure, but also in sustaining the creative and economic energy that the Colonial has long brought to the community.
