For fans of HBO’s Task, the Brad Ingelsby drama filmed across Delaware County, last week delivered the best kind of news: HBO has officially renewed the series for a second season.
Last week, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development released a statement announcing a major boost for the series. The release noted, in part, “Today, Pennsylvania Film Commissioner Gino Anthony Pesi announced the Pennsylvania Film Office has awarded $49.8 million through the Film Production Tax Credit Program to produce Season 2 of HBO’s critically acclaimed drama series TASK, created by Chester County native Brad Ingelsby. HBO estimates that Season 2 of TASK will inject $194.1 million into the economy in direct expenditures, creating and supporting more than 3,700 Pennsylvania jobs.”
Pesi underscored the importance of the investment, saying, “This is the largest tax credit we’ve ever awarded to one show, and we’re proud to support another returning series by homegrown storyteller Brad Ingelsby through the Film Production Tax Credit Program,” adding, “The Shapiro Administration understands that supporting productions like TASK have a powerful impact on Pennsylvania’s creative economy through the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs, while also giving new opportunities to local businesses in the southeastern region. We look forward to continuing this great partnership with HBO as we further grow the creative industries across the Commonwealth.”
Ingelsby also expressed his enthusiasm, noting, “I am thrilled to be filming another season of TASK in my home state of Pennsylvania. I’m deeply grateful that I get to tell stories about characters from this very specific part of the country while working alongside the wonderful people who also call Pennsylvania home.”
The second season will be filmed entirely in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Task aired on HBO and streamed on Max from September 7 through October 19, spanning seven episodes. The series follows Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo), a former priest turned FBI agent battling personal tragedy and alcoholism, as he leads a small task force investigating a string of violent home-invasion robberies. The crimes are orchestrated by Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey), a Philadelphia-area garbage collector and devoted family man living a double life. While raising his children and caring for his niece Maeve (Emilia Jones), he secretly teams up with coworker Cliff (Raúl Castillo) and friend Peaches (Owen Teague) to rob drug stash houses controlled by the Dark Hearts, a violent biker gang. Robbie’s motive is revealed as the season unfolds: his brother Billy (Maeve’s father) was murdered by the gang, and an informant inside the organization has been directing him to each target.
There is no word yet on when filming will begin or who will round out the cast, especially given that several major characters did not survive Season 1.
Regardless, fans of Task have plenty to celebrate as the acclaimed local drama prepares to return for another season.
