WEST CHESTER, PA — A hometown filmmaker is bringing a burst of humor and heart back to downtown West Chester with the return of a locally made cult-favorite character. Independent director Michael Zolomij has announced his newest short film, Becoming The Man: A Prequel, an eight-minute comedy set inside the iconic Hop Fidelity record store and built around themes of joy, community, and rediscovering purpose.
The film serves as a prelude to Zolomij’s earlier comedy RIP: Kevin The Man, which earned runner-up honors for the Audience Choice Award at the West Chester Film Festival. The prequel drops viewers into a difficult moment for protagonist Kevin, who is searching for connection, culture, and support during a personal low point.
Shot entirely in downtown West Chester, the project reunites the original ensemble — Kevin Suplee, Byron Greatorex, Michael Zolomij, Scott Derby, and Rob Frankel — while introducing newcomer and local set designer Dan Porto. Hop Fidelity employee Suplee and store owner Greatorex again anchor the story, rooting the comedy in the real-life atmosphere of the beloved Market Street record shop.
“This film is about finding your joy when everything feels lost,” Zolomij said, describing the project as both a character study and a celebration of community resilience.
The production continues Zolomij’s commitment to micro-budget filmmaking, relying on local talent, small businesses, and the creative energy of West Chester’s cultural scene. His approach demonstrates how meaningful stories can emerge without major studio resources — a philosophy embraced by the region’s growing independent arts community.
Becoming The Man: A Prequel will premiere at Hop Fidelity on January 2 at 8 p.m. The film has been submitted to the West Chester Film Festival and the Film Glance Film Festival in Philadelphia, with additional festival placements expected.
Hop Fidelity, located at 121 W. Market Street, remains a cornerstone of West Chester’s arts landscape and once again serves as both the setting and inspiration for Zolomij’s latest offbeat exploration of friendship, humor, and self-discovery.
