KENNETT SQUARE, PALongwood Gardens premiered Longwood Reimagined, a 55-minute documentary chronicling the ambitious four-year transformation of 17 acres at the iconic botanical destination. The film aired Tuesday, August 12, at 7:30 p.m. on WHYY.

Narrated by Emmy Award-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary) and directed by Philadelphia filmmaker Glenn Holsten, the documentary offers an inside look at one of the most significant projects in Longwood’s history. Viewers will follow architects, landscape designers, and preservationists as they blend contemporary design with the storied traditions of founder Pierre S. du Pont.

“This film gives audiences a rare glimpse into the vision, innovation, and intentional planning that happens behind the scenes at Longwood,” said Paul B. Redman, president and CEO of Longwood Gardens. “It captures the passion and purpose that guided our bold step into the future with this extraordinary project.”

Key elements of the Longwood Reimagined initiative include the 32,000-square-foot West Conservatory, designed by WEISS/MANFREDI with a Mediterranean-inspired landscape by Reed Hilderbrand, and sustainable design features throughout. The project also restored and relocated the historic Cascade Garden, the last of its kind in North America, and introduced a new home for the Gardens’ 1906 restaurant and an event space seamlessly integrated into existing architecture.

The film features insights from architects Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi, Reed Hilderbrand principal Kristin Fredrickson, and other collaborators who reflect on the challenges and artistry of creating spaces that honor heritage while embracing innovation.
