Why a Quarter-Century-Old Teacher Award Still Transforms Classrooms Across Our Region

Citadel Heart of Learning Awards

EXTON, PACitadel Credit Union is marking a milestone that stretches far beyond applause and plaques. The Citadel Heart of Learning Awards (CHOLA) turns 25 this year, celebrating a program that has quietly reshaped classrooms, boosted morale, and inspired thousands of students across Greater Philadelphia.

Since its inception in 2000, CHOLA has honored more than 430 educators and awarded nearly $600,000 in grants to teachers in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. This year’s anniversary arrives with fresh insight: a new survey of past recipients shows the program has delivered lasting, measurable impact.

Ninety-two percent of past winners said the recognition motivated them to stay in the teaching profession longer, a powerful data point at a time when schools nationwide are grappling with shortages and burnout. Eighty-seven percent said the award inspired new projects or learning programs, while 74% reported that CHOLA funds directly supported classroom enhancements, from STEM equipment to mental-health initiatives.

“Winning the Heart of Learning Award reminded me why I chose this profession,” one past recipient said. “It wasn’t just recognition, it was renewal.”

Schools across the region say the program has helped anchor cultures of care, excellence and community pride. Coatesville Area Senior High School Principal Brian Chenger said the impact has been clear and enduring.

“The Citadel Heart of Learning Award highlights the extraordinary dedication of teachers,” Chenger said. “When our educators are recognized for their commitment, it inspires students, colleagues and families to continue building a culture of excellence and kindness together.”

A Celebratory Campaign and a New Call for Nominations

To honor the program’s 25th year, Citadel is launching a multiweek celebration that includes social-media storytelling, community “Nomination Stations,” and a renewed push to identify educators who go above and beyond. Nominations are open through Jan. 15, 2026, at CitadelBanking.com/Nominate.

Branches across the region will feature forms and QR codes to simplify submissions, while posters in schools will encourage students and families to participate. Community members can also submit video nominations on TikTok, Instagram or Facebook by tagging Citadel and using #CitadelHeartofLearning.

“For 25 years, the Citadel Heart of Learning Awards have celebrated teachers who go above and beyond for their students,” said Bill Brown, president and CEO of Citadel Credit Union. “This survey reaffirms that recognition fuels innovation in the classroom and inspires future generations of educators.”

Citadel will host pop-up “Nomination Station” events at select schools and libraries, giving families more ways to honor local educators in person.

“Teachers are the backbone of our communities,” said Steve Miller, vice president of philanthropy and community engagement. “Our survey shows how meaningful recognition can be. It’s not just an award — it’s an investment in education that echoes far beyond one classroom.”

As CHOLA enters its 25th year, Citadel hopes the program’s next chapter will inspire even more educators — and spark the next generation of learning breakthroughs made possible by a simple act of recognition.
