MALVERN, PA — A record turnout and fast-paced competition helped Great Valley High School students raise more than $500 for scholarships during the Desmond Project’s annual 3v3 Basketball Tournament.

Held February 28, the long-running event drew 23 student teams — the largest field since 2016 — for a day of spirited competition that blended athletics, teamwork, and community service. The tournament, now in its twentieth year, has become a popular tradition at Great Valley High School, bringing students together to support classmates through scholarships and educational opportunities.

With only one champion emerging from a crowded bracket, the games were intense throughout the day. When the final buzzer sounded, the team The Powering Titans, made up of Ben Oswald, Nate Wilmer, and Marquis Alexander, captured the tournament title and the grand prize.

Beyond the competition, the atmosphere inside the gym reflected the event’s deeper purpose. Students, organizers, and supporters rallied around the Desmond Project’s mission of encouraging student achievement while strengthening the school community through shared experiences.

“The student organization and leadership from start to finish helped make this one of the best 3v3 tournaments I’ve been a part of,” said Desmond Project advisor Alex Venarchik.

Thank You to Organizers and Supporters

Organizers credited the success of the tournament to the student leaders of the Great Valley High School Desmond Project, the participating teams, and the volunteers who helped coordinate the event. The tournament was promoted and supported by student organizers, including Desmond Project Director of Public Relations Natalie Payne, along with advisor Alex Venarchik and school staff who helped guide the effort.

With strong participation and more than $500 raised to support scholarships and educational opportunities for Great Valley students, organizers say the event’s momentum will carry forward as planning begins for next year’s tournament.
