DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Students from Downingtown High School West gained firsthand insight into local policing while strengthening community relationships during a recent visit to the West Brandywine Township Police Department as part of the district’s Making Connections program.
The initiative, organized in partnership with the Downingtown Area School District’s Office of Student Relations and School Climate, is designed to foster trust, mutual respect, and open dialogue between students and local law enforcement.
During the visit, students toured the police department and observed where officers carry out daily operations. Officers demonstrated training exercises and showcased equipment used in routine policing, offering students a closer look at the responsibilities involved in maintaining public safety.
The experience also included an interactive lunch with officers, creating a relaxed setting where students could ask questions and discuss policing, safety, and community expectations. The atmosphere throughout the day was conversational and engaging, with students and officers sharing perspectives and building understanding.
“My experience was really informative,” said Downingtown High School West student Jimmy Neal. “[Police officers] only have a fraction of a second to make decisions that can impact the community, so it gave me insight into the challenges they face.”
The visit brought together students along with Justin Brown, Director of Student Relations and School Climate; Making Connections advisor Annie Williams; and West Brandywine Township Police Department Lieutenant Kenneth Michels and Corporal Richard Craig, who helped lead the discussions and demonstrations.
Thank You to Organizers and Partners
District leaders credited the success of the visit to the collaboration between the Downingtown Area School District’s Office of Student Relations and School Climate, the Making Connections program team, and the officers of the West Brandywine Township Police Department who welcomed students and shared their experiences.
As the Making Connections program continues, district officials say additional opportunities are planned to help students engage with local public servants and strengthen relationships across the Downingtown community.
