DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Downingtown STEM Academy and Downingtown High School East recently hosted community engagement events through the Making Connections program, a district initiative that brings students and local police together to foster understanding, trust, and open dialogue.
The program, coordinated by the Downingtown Area School District’s Office of Student Relations and School Climate, aims to build stronger relationships between law enforcement and youth through honest discussion and shared experiences.
At Downingtown STEM Academy, students met with Officer Maureen Rae of the East Brandywine Township Police Department for a conversation focused on safe interactions with police, traffic violations, and juvenile offenses. At Downingtown East, Officer James Gallagher of the Uwchlan Township Police Department joined students for a similar discussion that ended with a friendly game of kickball.
Officer Rae said the informal setting gives students a chance to see officers as approachable members of the community rather than authority figures. She explained that having these conversations outside of disciplinary contexts helps build mutual respect and encourages young people to view police officers as allies and resources.
The Making Connections initiative reflects Downingtown Area School District’s broader focus on positive school climate and community collaboration. By encouraging open communication and personal interaction, district leaders say the program helps students gain perspective on law enforcement while strengthening the sense of safety and connection within the community.
