DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Downingtown Area School District said it is recognizing Autism Acceptance Month in April with a series of activities aimed at promoting inclusion and understanding among students and the community.

The district said schools will host events throughout the month, including educational programs, spirit weeks, and student-led initiatives focused on neurodiversity.

According to the district, Autism Acceptance Month builds on efforts that date back to the 1970s and gained international recognition in 2007 when the United Nations designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day.

The district said one highlight will be a visit from Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Darius Cooper, who is scheduled to speak with elementary students about kindness and acceptance.

West Bradford Elementary School will also create a mural titled “Acceptance is Always in Bloom,” reflecting the school’s focus on inclusion.

Justin Brown, the district’s director of student relations and school climate, said the initiatives are intended to strengthen student engagement and connection.

“When students feel accepted for who they are, they’re more confident, more connected, and more willing to engage,” Brown said.
