WEST CHESTER, PA — Dr. Jennifer Chandler, associate professor and chair of biology at West Chester University, has been selected to participate in the Department Chair Leadership Institute (DCLI), a national program hosted by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).
Building Leadership Skills for Academic Chairs
Chandler was one of 34 higher education leaders nationwide chosen for the 2025 cohort, which convened this summer in Washington, D.C. The program provided intensive professional development on the challenges academic chairs face, from strategic communication and conflict resolution to student success, leadership styles, and wellness.
The institute also focused on peer networking, giving participants opportunities to share experiences and strengthen collaboration across institutions.
Bringing Lessons Back to Campus
“Participating in AASCU’s Department Chair Leadership Institute was a truly transformative experience,” Chandler said. “I was able to connect with chairs from across the country; learn from expert coaches dedicated to building strong, independent leaders; and share in the experiences of others who understand the challenges of this role. I’m proud to bring back the knowledge I’ve gained to strengthen my department and contribute to the broader community at WCU.”
Launched in 2024, the program is designed to address the unique needs of department chairs, who play a pivotal role in advancing their institutions’ missions and supporting student achievement.
WCU Faculty Continue Legacy of Leadership
Chandler follows several West Chester University colleagues who joined earlier cohorts, including Dr. Cristobal Cardemil-Krause, chair of languages and cultures; Dr. Ginneh Akbar, chair of graduate social work; and David Jones, chair of art + design.
AASCU’s Broader Mission
Based in Washington, D.C., AASCU represents more than 500 regional public colleges and universities. Its members share a strong commitment to teaching, serving underrepresented students, and advancing local and regional economic development. The DCLI program is supported by Academic Search, with Richard Helldobler, president of William Paterson University in New Jersey, serving as executive sponsor and lead faculty member.
Chandler’s selection highlights West Chester University’s growing role in preparing faculty leaders to address the challenges of higher education while continuing to strengthen the student experience.
