WEST CHESTER, PA — Five West Chester University students are channeling their coursework into community impact with The Great Pumpkin Play Day, a family-oriented fall festival set for Sunday, October 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the university campus.

The event, part of the students’ Community Change course, will feature games, face painting, hair tinsel, children’s races, temporary tattoos, and a basket raffle. All proceeds will support Safe Harbor of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that provides shelter, meals, and essential services to individuals experiencing homelessness.

Beyond raising funds, the students are collecting items for care packages that will be distributed to Safe Harbor residents. Donations such as hygiene supplies, warm weather gear, and comfort items are being requested but are not required for attendance.

“Our goal was to create something meaningful that also connects the community,” said one of the student organizers. “We wanted to make a day that’s fun for families but also gives back to people who really need support right here in West Chester.”

From obtaining event permits and sponsorships to coordinating volunteers and raffle prizes, the students have managed every element of the project themselves, demonstrating how service learning can translate into real-world leadership and civic engagement.

The Great Pumpkin Play Day is open to the public. Organizers are encouraging residents to attend, enjoy the festivities, and support Safe Harbor’s mission to help those in need across Chester County.
